GENTLE YOGA CLASSES

Tuesday evenings, 6:30-7:30 pm,

beginning February 7, 2017

Gentle Yoga is designed to meet students where they are- whether recovering from illness or injury or simply searching for a calmer,  healthier life-style.

The one hour class begins with a mindful, present-moment practice followed by breathing techniques to instill relaxation.  Warm-up movements are used to get energy flowing and a variety of yoga poses are offered that can be modified or supported by props to help students find comfortable, safe postures.

This class is appropriate for beginners or the experienced student who wishes to return to a calm, steady practice.

Yoga Nidra

Join Mike Elliff CAy as we explore the Principles and Practice of Yoga Nidra. The "Sleep of the Yogi" is a state of awareness in which the student is completely relaxed and increasingly aware of one's inner world by following a guided set of instructions. During the practice, four of the five senses are internalized and the body-mind is able to deeply heal and tend itself. Yoga Nidra is one of the deepest states of relaxation one can experience while still remaining conscious.

This practice has been found to heal unresolved issues and trauma, reduce stress, anxiety, physical symptoms and has helped those who suffer from PTSD. The Yoga Nidra experience supports one in recognizing the underlying peace of mind that is always present, amidst all changes and circumstances that arise in life. An hour of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to 4 hours of conventional sleep. Mike's classes are informed by the evidence based transformative teachings of Richard Miller and the Integrative Restoration Institute.

About Yoga:

Yoga is an ancient discipline that explores, integrates, and unifies the body, mind, and spirit. Through physical movements, breathing techniques and meditation, the practice of yoga systematically stretches and strengthens muscles throughout the body, increases circulation to internal organs and glands, soothes the nervous system, and develops mindfulness and presence.

Yoga philosophy views the body as the primary instrument that enables us to work and evolve in the world, so it is treated with great care and respect. Through the practice of poses, each of which has specific physical and energetic benefits, balance is created by improving flexibility and cultivating strength.  Breathing techniques are based on the understanding that breath is the source of life in the body. The yoga student learns to regulate the breath to improve the health and function of body and to quiet the mind. The practices of conscious movement and breath, thus prepare the body and mind for meditation.  In meditation, the student’s awareness is guided inward in attempt to quiet and reduce the activity of the mind, offering silence and healing from everyday stressors. Therefore, a regular yoga practice (movement, breathing and meditation) brings vitality, health, deep relaxation, happiness and peace.

Yoga is the most holistic way to address the body, mind and spirit.  For those of you who are uncertain,  you are invited to try just one class.  You may be surprised that it is exactly what you’re looking for.

The BENEFITS of yoga are extensive and include:

  • Chronic stress relief
  • Pain relief
  • Detoxification
  • Relaxation
  • Improved flexibility, joint mobility
  • Improved digestion and elimination
  • Improved cardiovascular functioning and circulation
  • Tonified internal organs
