When Should I Contact a Psychiatrist?
Many people at some point in their lives suffer from symptoms of psychiatric issues including depression, rapid mood changes, anxiety, sleep interference, hyperactivity, or mania. Sometimes the cause of these symptoms is related to the environment, other times the cause is a chemical imbalance, and even other times symptoms become present in one's life because of a combination of chemical imbalance and environmental factors.
Basically, anytime you have symptoms that interfere with your living life in the most productive, healthy, and happy ways you want, you might consider meeting with someone to determine if you would benefit from taking prescription medications. While taking medications can be very helpful, even more effective is combining medications with psychotherapy. Research continually finds that combining psychotherapy and medication is much more effective than either one separately.
Why a Psychiatrist and Not My Family Doctor?
The best person to determine if medication is right for you is a psychiatrist. With all the new medications being introduced regularly, a psychiatrist is able to focus on those that specifically help with psychiatric disorders. While many primary care physicians, internists, and other medical specialists know about some of the more common psychiatric medications, most simply can’t keep up with the variety of new medications being offered to assist with psychiatric needs. A psychiatrist can also coordinate between other health professionals involved in your care such as your psychotherapist and your primary care doctor. The St. Louis Wellness Center is home to a number of health care providers, including a psychiatrist, who are invested in helping you live the best life possible!
